Crows learn from loss

Crows learn from Saints loss

27/07/2009 9:51 AM

Adelaide coach Neil Craig has praised his team's ability to rebound and learn lessons from past losses after thrashing Port Adelaide in Showdown XXVII at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The Crows staged a 127-point turnaround in eight days, losing by 57 points to the Saints before bouncing back to beat the Power by 70.

Craig said the team did well to remain positive after its setback in Round 16.

"The playing group certainly didn't get down on themselves, we learnt a lot of good lessons out of it (the Saints' game) as in the standard we need to still go to," Craig said.

"It shows they have a lot of belief in themselves. We didn't change anything that we've done; we just understand we need to do it better in reality."

Craig said the result against St Kilda spurred the players on rather than stunting their progress this season.

"We are a very resilient group, they are very clear where they want to go, they are happy to learn a lesson a hard way," he said.

"More importantly they now realise there are a lot of things from last week that they want to add to the way they want to play."

"That won't happen overnight but when it is incorporated into our footy I think it'll be an exceptional side."

Meanwhile Adelaide's end-of-season culling is set to be a difficult process with the Crows' senior players performing well against Port.

Adelaide has four players over the age of 30 - Andrew McLeod, Brett Burton, Tyson Edwards and Simon Goodwin - and it's unlikely all will get the nod to play on next year.

Burton is under greatest pressure, having just returned from an 11-month knee injury, but he kicked four goals in his second game back.

"The next five weeks and hopefully longer is really important for those guys. I was really pleased with Brett's response this week, he had a bad game last week," Craig said.

"To come out and do what he did tonight, in reasonably tough conditions for him was good. That was always on the cards because he's such a competitive player and has a lot of self respect for himself."

McLeod has had a solid but not spectacular season and collected 30 disposals on Sunday. Craig said the form of his senior players would be watched closely for the rest of the year.

"McLeod and Goodwin, and I put Edwards in the same category, have been very good
