Lynch in the clear for Eagles

Lynch in the clear for Eagles

13/08/2007 5:38 PM

Reigning premiers West Coast were left breathing a sigh of relief on Monday after the AFL match review panel threw out a charging report against spearhead Quinten Lynch.

As the Eagles' bid to win back-to-back flags for the first time begins to gain momentum - with the club moving into the top four following Sunday's win over the Kangaroos - a suspension to their leading goalkicker could have put a major dent in their hopes of securing the double chance, particularly with Andrew Embley now out with a hamstring injury and with skipper Chris Judd struggling with on-going groin problems.

Lynch was reported for charging the Kangaroos' Jesse Smith after making contact with the back of the young Roos' defender in a marking contest.

However the panel, in dismissing the charge, said Lynch was already leaving the ground in an attempt to mark when he made contact with Smith so the contact was unavoidable.

The panel also added that Lynch had tried to lessen the impact by turning slightly and placing his hands on Smith's back while also trying to lower his raised knee, which he had used to jump, to also lessen the impact once he realised contact would be made.

However Brisbane's in-form youngster Rhan Hooper wasn't so lucky, hit with a two match ban for striking Hawthorn's Rick Ladson.

And if Hooper decides to challenge the panel's decision, he will risk a three match ban.

Collingwood's Ben Johnson was charged with striking Richmond's Daniel Jackson after wrestling charges between the pair were dropped.

But Johnson can accept a reprimand and just 70.31 points towards his future record by pleading guilty, thanks to his unblemished record over the past five years.

There was also mixed news for Port with Damon White offered a one game ban for charging Carlton's Brendan Fevola but the match-day report laid against Daniel Motlop for striking Carlton's Bret Thornton was thrown out.

Port star Chad Cornes was also looked at but cleared of any wrongdoing over a tackle on Carlton youngster Luke Blackwell, although the panel admitted the technique of Cornes' tackle was 'not desirable.'

But the fact he did not dump Blackwell on either his shoulder or his head saved him from a report which could have jeopardised his Brownlow Medal chances.

Cornes was also involved in a running battle during that game with Fevola but the Blues' spearhead was cleared over an incident in which his arm made contact to Cornes' face as the panel ruled the force of the contact was not excessive.

Meanwhile the issue of umpire contact was again to the fore this week with even a club runner - St Kilda's Danny Sexton - hit with a $2400 fine.

Hawthorn's Chance Bateman copped the same amount but St Kilda's Jason Gram and Collingwood's Heath Shaw were cleared of the same offence.

The panel also chose to take no action against the Hawthorn and Brisbane players that took part in a half-time push and shove in close vicinity of youngsters waiting to play in an Auskick game during the main break, saying the players had not been involving in any 'vigorous grappling.'

And St Kilda's Steven Baker and Sydney's Peter Everitt are in the clear following their second quarter clash on Saturday night at Telstra Stadium due to a lack of video evidence.
