Elite Ebi in the zone

Elite Ebi in the zone

20/01/2008 1:10 PM

The floods continued in Brisbane on Saturday night as Ebi Ere rained in a career-high 51 points in just 32 minutes of court time as he led the Bullets to their second highest point scoring total in the franchise's history.

Brisbane's effort in the 155-107 thrashing of the Adelaide 36ers has only been eclipsed by the 170 points scored in the Leroy Loggins era against the Wollongong Hawks in 1989.

The total for the Bullets was also a season high, a title held previously by Brisbane and the Hawks who had both recorded games of 132 points earlier on in this campaign.

Ere's performance is further evidence that he should rank among some of the best players to have ever sported a Brisbane Bullets singlet including fellow American Loggins and Shane Heal.

Only Heal and Loggins, 61 points and 55 points respectively, have been able to record half centuries for the club and now the 27 year-old shooting guard has joined their exclusive ranks.

Ere was obviously feeling it all game long, doing most of his damage in the second and fourth quarters.

"Everything I threw up was going in. I got a lot of open looks that I didn't think I would get. I was definitely in the zone," Ere said.

MVP chants chorused around what seemed like a packed stadium as the deafening war cry reached its crescendo in the fourth quarter following Ere's fourth triple in the space of a minute.

Ere stamped his claim for the MVP crown in what was a vintage shooting performance.

"He must like that HUMMER," joked Adelaide coach Phil Smyth after the game.

The impending birth of his third child proved to be of no distraction for Ere as he steered his side to its' third straight win while individually dishing out to Adelaide its' third consecutive defeat and the 36ers worst loss in club history.

"I joked with the guys before the game," Ere said. "They were like, 'you better do something before you leave' so I said yeah, 'I'll get 50 for you before I go'."

Adelaide's playoff chances remain slim as it needs four victories from the final six regular season games for a chance to enter the top eight.

A disappointed Smyth held nothing but high praise for the man who singlehandedly took the game away from the tired visitors who played their third game in four days.

"Ebi's playing at a different level than anybody else in the league right now, a notch up on anyone else," Smyth said.

"The great part about it for the Bullets and for the league is that he is doing it every night. Guys who produce it every night at a high level are elite and Ebi's in that elite group."

Ere will fly out to the States on Sunday so he can be with his wife Tia who is having the couple's child in their hometown of Oklahoma.

There was an injury concern for Bullet CJ Bruton, though, after the guard left the game midway through the third quarter with a sprained ankle.

However Brisbane coach Joey Wright said it was nothing serious and that if Saturday's game was close, then Bruton wouldn't have looked twice at the bench.

He also said to expect Bruton to play against fourth-placed Perth as the Wildcats travel to Brisbane on Friday night.

In other injury news, 36ers guard Brett Maher is expected to miss a further two weeks with a calf injury.
