WA seeks quick runs against Blues

WA seeks quick runs against Blues

27/11/2009 1:25 PM

New South Wales has taken the same approach as Wednesday's Ford Ranger Cup loss to Western Australia by winning the toss and sending WA in to bat in the Sheffield Shield clash at the WACA.

Stuart Clark is captaining NSW for the first time in a Shield match and will be looking to extract whatever life he can out of the opening morning WACA wicket as he partners Test 12th man Doug Bollinger with the new ball.

WA's batting impressed on Wednesday after being challenged to lift by coach Tom Moody with Shaun Marsh hitting 116, his 18-year-old brother Mitch 60 and Wes Robinson continuing his good form with 70.

The Shield game is where the Warriors need the big scores though, and the pressure will be on Shaun Marsh, Adam Voges, Luke Towers and Theo Doropoulos to show they can stand up, while Mitch Marsh makes his debut after his incredible 60 off 29 balls on Wednesday.

The Blues have drawn both their first two Sheffield Shield games this season in Sydney with Tasmania and WA, while the Warriors blew first-innings points in a draw with Queensland to start the season at the WACA, drew with the Blues and went on to lose disappointingly last week to Victoria after claiming first-innings points at the MCG.

NSW comes in without Test players Shane Watson, Simon Katich, Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin and Nathan Hauritz, and has recalled David Warner for his first Shield game this season to join Phillip Hughes and Phil Jaques in a strong top order.

The Warriors' fast bowling stocks will be tested with Ashley Noffke (ankle) and Brett Dorey (Achilles) ruled out leaving Justin Coetzee to come into the side as Steve Magoffin, Brad Knowles and Michael Hogan will spearhead the attack.

Teams:
Western Australia -
Adam Voges (captain), Wes Robinson, Luke Towers, Shaun Marsh, Mitch Marsh, Theo Doropoulos, Luke Ronchi, Justin Coetzee, Steve Magoffin, Brad Knowles, Michael Hogan, Josh Mangan (12th man).

New South Wales - Stuart Clark (captain), David Warner, Phillip Hughes, Phil Jaques, Ben Rohrer, Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith, Daniel Smith, Moises Henriques, Josh Hazlewood, Doug Bollinger, Grant Lambert (12th man).
