Eels hammer wonky Wests

18/08/2008 9:28 PM

Parramatta's remarkable hold over the Wests Tigers has continued with a comprehensive 40-12 victory, keeping their top eight hopes alive and kicking.

It is the eighth straight time Parramatta has beaten the joint venture club in a winning run stretching back to 2004.

The latest triumph leaves the Eels two points outside the eight with three rounds left, while 11th-placed Wests will live to fight another day despite the heavy defeat.

Parramatta was on the board early at Parramatta Stadium after being gifted possession by the Tigers.

The ball went wide a few plays later for Jarryd Hayne to flick a ball out the back for Joel Reddy.

Reddy sent a basketball pass to Taulima Tautia who crashed over the top of Brett Hodgson to score in the corner.

The Eels went further ahead in the 14th minute, prop Fuifui Moimoi rumbling his way past some feeble defence to score next to the posts.

Krisnan Inu landed the extras for a 10-0 lead.

Inu potted a penalty goal in the 19th minute before the Eels went further ahead with a converted try to Nathan Hindmarsh five minutes later.

When Hayne reproduced his flick pass to send Tautai in for his double at the 33rd minute mark, the Tigers looked to be heading for a hiding at 22-0.

Benji Marshall gave the visitors hope two minutes before the break, pouncing on a loose ball and racing 60m to score.

Hodgson's sideline conversion left Parramatta 22-6 in front at halftime.

The Tigers needed to score first after the interval to stand any chance and duly delivered 12 minutes in.

Robbie Farah's lobbed kick into the Parramatta in-goal evaded a host of players before dropping into the grateful hands of Chris Heighington.

Hodgson slotted the easy two-pointer and the Tigers had a sniff at 22-12.

But from the kick off Taniela Tuiaki dropped the ball, inviting the Eels to strike immediately.

Hayne did just that, flung to the ground by four players but crawling his way onto the tryline.

Inu added the extras and there was no way back for the Tigers at 28-12

Feleti Mateo and Hayne added late tries to complete the rout.

The Eels received a late scare when Mateo was forced from the field with a knee injury.
