Raiders call on unknown rookie

Raiders call on unknown rookie

22/07/2008 7:12 PM

Canberra has hauled unknown rookie Marc Herbert from the Queensland Cup to cover for Todd Carney following the star half-back's indefinite suspension.

Carney has been stood down by the Raiders after police launched an investigation into off-field incident at a Canberra nightspot on Sunday night.

Herbert, who has been playing with Souths Logan in Brisbane, will make his first grade debut against Gold Coast at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.

"He's been with the club for a number of years now and he's been trekking up to Souths Logan (Queensland Cup) this year and playing some good football," coach Neil Henry said of Hebert.

"He's coming in to the team under different circumstances but he gets his opportunity to play."

Herbert said: "I’ve been in and out with injury all year and doing my best up in Queensland so it’s good to get a shot."

"The side has been in good form so hopefully I can just slot into the team and keep up the winning form."

Centre Brett Delaney makes his way back for the Titans, who will use Ashley Harrison at five-eighth in place of the injured Mat Rogers.

Cronulla has left Greg Bird out of the side to meet Brisbane in a crucial Friday night clash at ANZ Stadium, but there is strong mail the Origin and Test star will make his return from a knee injury.

Representative centre Justin Hodges returns for Brisbane after serving a lengthy suspension.

Parramatta coach Michael Hagan has kept faith with his under-performing side, making just once change to the team to meet the struggling Cowboys at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.

Matthew Keating is the new hooker with Mark Riddell relegated to the bench.

Two skippers - Newcastle's Danny Buderus and the Tigers' Brett Hodgson - are back for their respective clubs.

Wests take on Penrith on Saturday while the Knights are at home to Souths on Sunday.

With Issac Luke suspended for a week, George Ndaira comes in at hooker for the Rabbitohs.

Veteran Steve Menzies will take the place of injured five-eighth Jamie Lyon for Sunday's blockbuster against the Roosters at the SFS.

And the Bulldogs expect Sonny Bill Williams to play against the Dragons in Monday night football after the Kiwi superstar sat out last week's loss to the Warriors.
