2008 AFL Fixture: Club reaction

Adelaide:
"We did request seven games in Victoria (six matches have been programmed)," said Crows CEO Steven Trigg. "That's a developing market for us and its also another opportunity for many of our fans from South Australia to travel to support us. There also some quirky parts of the draw - playing West Coast in rounds two and nine for instance. But the AFL has done this to help with travel loads and to reduce the number of six-day breaks, so we understand all that."
Brisbane:
"Overall, we'll be looking to generate some real TV audience and crowd attendance records for these matches with our excellent relationship with the AFL's official broadcasters," said Lions CEO Michael Bowers. "Equally importantly, Saturday night continues to be our match-day domain. So when Saturday night arrives we hope all our members and supporters are either barracking for us live at the game or watching us on the TV. It's disappointing for the club's Victorian supporters that our request for a Lions game to be played in Melbourne much earlier than Round Eight was rejected. Like we did in '07, we also lobbied for seven Victorian games in 2008 - namely six in Melbourne - for our southern members and supporters which was again knocked back by the AFL. So in return I would ask that the AFL increases its free-to-air national coverage of our young and exciting team in action to compensate our very patient Melbourne followers."
Carlton:
"Playing a home game in round one is important, particularly for membership," said Blues CEO Greg Swann. "We are pleased to be playing 18 games in Melbourne and for the first time in four years we will not have to travel interstate more than four times."
Collingwood:
"I think it is a very good fixture for Collingwood, 14 games at the MCG with 10 of those by Round 12," said Pies CEO Gary Pert. "The MCG is a venue that the Collingwood players really enjoy and our members and supporters have access to some of the best sporting facilities in the world. Our supporters can look forward to potential blockbusters at the MCG against Carlton, Geelong, West Coast and Melbourne by the mid-season point. I'm sure all Collingwood supporters will be delighted that they will have the opportunity to attend 18 of the 22 games without leaving Melbourne. All in all as we prepare to launch into our pre-season training program the fixture will now allow our members to have a bit more clarity of what to expect for the year."
Essendon:
"It's not a bad draw for the club and we are happy with it," said Bombers managing director Peter Jackson. "It would have been nice to have a game in Brisbane for the sake of our supporters there but, overall, we are happy."
Fremantle:
"I think the fixture is very positive on a whole lot of levels," said Dockers CEO Cameron Schwab. "We look at the fixtures obviously in regards to what gives us the best chance from a playing perspective, particularly as a travelling team but also what it means from a commercial point of view too, in particular the types of games we get to play at home and this coming year we've got some fantastic home fixtures against big clubs which is great for our members
