Blues v Saints snippets
TURNING POINT: Trailing by 35 points at the final change, the Blues defied the recent trend by winning the final term and running the Saints close. Brad Fisher got the Blues going, goaling from one of his four contested marks for the match and followed-up with another soon after. Ross Lyon blamed defensive lapses for Carlton's comeback but the Saints were able to hang on.
CLASSIC GRAB: There were no great individual spekkies in this encounter, but Nick Riewoldt provided the next best thing with six outstanding contested marks for the match, each completed under extreme pressure. He was able to goal directly from two of them.
STAR MAN: Fraser Gehrig has averaged a touch under six goals a game the last six times he's taken the field against the Blues. Saturday's six was much more than par for the course, however - it was a match-winning effort. He scored goals in every quarter including what proved to be the sealer 27 minutes into the final term.
ABSOLUTE SHOCKER: Jason Blake got a bit too cute when trying to run the ball out of defence early in the final term. His handball over Brendan Fevola was neatly picked off by the Carlton star who put plenty of fade on his dribbled shot from deep in the right forward pocket for a goal that kept the match alive.
WHAT A GOAL! Brendan Fevola already had two goals on the board when he chased down Sam Fisher from behind at the 16-minute mark of the first quarter, grabbed the loose ball and played on from just inside the Carlton half. There was no-one inside the Blues' 50, so Fev had a ping from 75. The ball pitched five metres out and took a huge leg break straight through for a super sausage roll!
UNSUNG HERO: Carlton youngster Ryan Jackson broke his hand minutes into his only other appearance this season against Brisbane in round five. But in this, just his third senior appearance, the 20-year-old midfielder played with poise and presence, gathering 23 possessions and 12 marks in a run-with role on Robert Harvey.
