Cassisi confident of victory

Cassisi confident of victory

21/07/2010 7:53 AM

Power captain Dom Cassisi has revealed he is confident Port Adelaide can break its record nine-game losing streak with a win against the inform Crows in the Showdown at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The form of the two sides couldn't be more contrasting with the Crows recording four consecutive wins, including a shock victory over Geelong last week.

Cassisi highlighted Port has the wood over Adelaide in recent meetings, although the Power skipper admitted Adelaide is in outstanding form.

"We've won three of the last four Showdowns so we go in with a lot of confidence," he said.

"Obvioulsy the Crows are playing outstanding footy at the moment. They had a great win against Geelong on Friday night, I watched that game and they were outstanding. We're looking forward to the challenge."

Cassisi acknowledged the tide has changed since the most recent Showdown in Round 6 when Port Adelaide had won four of its opening six matches and the Crows were without a win and staring at the wooden spoon.

The 27 year-old believes Port aren't too far off the mark but said a more consistent, four-quarter effort is required to turn its fortune around.

"The boot is on the other foot now really," he said.

"We just need to try and turn it around. I think our effort hasn't been too bad, our tackling and contested ball has been ok. Our first quarters have been really, really good against great opposition, we just need to sustain that for longer periods."

Cassisi admitted Port has struggled recently with injuries and much like Adelaide in Round 6, the Power is finding their injury list rather long.

The captain hopes for some handy inclusions this week and said with interim coach Matthew Primus at the helm, every player on the list is 'on notice' and playing for their future.

"We look forward to getting some quality players this weekend," he said.

"I think selection will be pretty interesting this weekend. There's going to be a few changes so I've got no doubt that once we get some quality players back, we have missed some polish with our skills, I think we'll get a win on the board and I don't think it's too far around the corner."

"The guys coming in the team will want to prove that they want to play for Matty and play for the club and win. Matty has made a pretty strong stance that in the next six or seven weeks everyone is pretty much on notice we all need to perform and show we all want to play for the club."

While Daniel Motlop is guaranteed to miss the Showdown because of suspension, Chad Cornes may be recalled after a less than inspiring performance with Glenelg in the SANFL.

Cornes has expressed his desire to be a part of Josh Carr's farewell game and Cassisi highlighted the 230-game veteran will bring a lot of experience and emotion into the Showdown.

"Obviously he's an experienced player and provides a lot of experience out there," he said.

"He's a great mate of Carry's as well and he expressed he'd love to play in that game and hopefully he's in the team."

"Chad obviously gets pretty fired up emotionally for the Showdowns, I think everyone does for both sides, so it's great to have him out there if he does get the opportunity this week he'll definitely be looking forward to it."
