Cats keep on cruising

Cats keep on cruising

16/08/2008 10:58 PM

Geelong has cruised to an emphatic 39-point triumph - its 11th in succession - over a gallant but outclassed Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

The hosts kept pace with the competition leaders in the opening two quarters before the Cats piled on the pain with a match-winning six-goal blitz in the penultimate term on the way to a 20.13 (133) to 14.10 (94) victory.

Gary Ablett showed his class throughout and was the pick of an impressive bunch for the Cats, adding three goals to his season tally and claiming 32 possessions, while Joel Corey (28 possessions) and Jimmy Bartel (29) weren't far behind.

The loss leaves the Swans in fifth position but Paul Roos' men will drop to sixth on the ladder should North Melbourne beat Carlton on Sunday.

It was not all doom and gloom for Sydney, with the performances of Barry Hall and Paul Bevan a shining light on a tough night for the hosts.

The Cats answered the Swans' opening-minute major with seven-unanswered goals to establish a commanding lead over the shell-shocked hosts.

Three late Sydney goals gave the home crowd reason to cheer as Roos' men cut the deficit to 21 points at the first change.

Momentum remained with the Swans at the resumption as they closed within three goals on the back of Jarred Moore's early major before the defending premiers again pulled away with quick-fire majors to Travis Varcoe and Ablett.

After an early avalanche of goals the match developed into an old-fashioned arm wrestle - an Adam Goodes major the only goal from either side in the final 20 minutes of the half as the Cats clung to a 22-point lead at the main break.

As they had done in the previous two quarters the Swans snared the first goal of the third term to trail by a just 16 points.

But any hope of a stirring comeback was short lived as Geelong flexed its premiership muscle peeling off six-successive majors to blow the Swans out of the contest at the final break trailing by an unassailable 53 points.

To its credit Sydney refused to hoist the white flag trimming the lead to 40 points with three early majors to outscore the visitors by two goals in the final stanza.
