Chaplin: Brogan a great motivator

19/06/2008 11:02 AM

Forget Choco, Tredders or Chad - Dean Brogan has become Port Adelaide's latest and greatest motivator.

The Power's finals aspirations are all but over but not if the fiery ruckman has anything to do with it. In the past few weeks, Brogan has put in some big efforts both on and off the field.

Team-mate Troy Chaplin said the 29-year-old is leading by example.

"Dean Brogan has been absolutely fantastic ... he's one guy that the playing group have looked to and he's really delivered," Chaplin said.

"He's playing good football and he's backing himself up. If he has a crack at you on the ground, you listen ... if he says put your head over the ball you know you've got to do it because he's doing it every time."

Chaplin said the official leadership group was still contributing but added Brogan's input had provided a refreshing change.

The 200cm player organised an informal session for the team before its Wednesday training and during the Cats game was seen willing on his team-mates during a break.

Chaplin said Brogan's enthusiasm was spreading.

"(He's) tried to get the group up. Everyone is starting to buy into that now and we realise that's what we've got to do to get us up and going," he said.

"It gives Steven Salopek and myself the courage to step up and stand up and say things now because when you see a guy like him say something, and back it up, it gives you a lot of courage and a lot of faith in your own decision making."

Port will need plenty of inspirational efforts if it is to achieve its ambitious goal of making the finals.

The recovery mission begins on Saturday afternoon when it tackles the Tigers at AAMI Stadium.

Chaplin has put his hand up to take on Matthew Richardson, believing he has the aerobic capacity to stick with the in-form veteran.

"I've played on guys like Riewoldt and Brown before so I don't see how it could be any different … those guys are pretty darn fit so I'd like to have the challenge," he said.

"He's a superstar of the AFL and it's probably been well documented that his goal kicking wasn't great but you have a look on the weekend and he kicks five goals."

"He's added another a string to his bow and it's a credit to him."
