With so many star players already ruled ineligible; Western Bulldogs' star midfielder Adam Cooney says this year's race for the Brownlow Medal could develop into a last man standing affair.
Cooney, who chalks up his 100th AFL game on Sunday night when the Bulldogs take on Collingwood in the match of the round, is second favourite to take out the game's highest individual honour this season - having averaged just over 27 possessions per game this season.
But Cooney joked on Wednesday that with the likes of Lance Franklin, Sam Mitchell, Adam Goodes, Chad Cornes, Travis Cloke and Adam Simpson already having been ruled ineligible after having pleaded guilty to a reportable offence - it could be a case of whoever is left eligible walking away with the Brownlow.
"The winner might do a bit of a Steven Bradbury with everyone falling over this year, we will have to wait and see," he said.
Cooney was reluctant to talk up his own chances on Wednesday saying that when he hears the words 'Brownlow Medal favourite' - he immediately thinks of Geelong superstar Gary Ablett.
"I suppose it's still along way to go and I try not to take too much notice of it," Cooney said of his growing Brownlow Medal credentials.
"It's only a distraction when I get asked about it by the media and I will just keep doing what I am doing, playing my role and that is what matters."
But Cooney has been pleased by his consistency this year after an up and down 2007 season when his form - just like this year - reflected that of his team.
"In previous years I have been a bit up and down and I spoke about it in the pre-season and tried to get my fitness up to be able to play more consistent footy."
While Bulldogs' coach Rodney Eade felt the criticism last year of Cooney was unfair, the 2003 number one draft pick felt it was more than justified.
"I don't think I was unfairly reviewed," Cooney said.
"I had been in the system four years as of last year and wasn't performing as consistently as I should be."
Cooney said he is amazed how quickly he has reached the 100 game milestone, saying it felt just like yesterday that he was being talked about as the number one draft pick of 2003.
"Time flies when you are having fun, (back in 2003) I had silly hair and I
