Daniher: Motivation no problem

Neale Daniher says motivation certainly won't be a problem for The Dream Team when it takes on Victoria in Saturday night's AFL Hall of Fame match at the MCG.
While Victoria appears to have a major advantage over The Dream Team when it comes to team-bonding ahead of Saturday night's one-off match, Daniher said the common hatred of the Big V amongst players from the other states and territories that make up The Dream Team would be a strong motivating force for his team on Saturday night.
Daniher, a former Melbourne coach and former coach of The Allies state of origin team in the 1990's and now assistant coach to Mark Williams for Saturday night's match, drew on his own experiences of representing New South Wales against Victoria in his playing days to explain why there will be no shortage of motivation for the visitors on Saturday night.
"The focus is always knocking the Vics off, particularly at home," he said.
"I was involved with New South Wales when we beat the Vics at the SCG (in 1990) and that Vic guernsey seems to bring the best out of (opposition) players no matter where you are from."
Daniher said it should not be forgotten that most of the players that will play for The Dream Team on Saturday would have long memories of being on the receiving end of the arrogance of the AFL's powerhouse state from their junior days playing in various under age championships.
"They would all have memories of playing junior footy where the Big V has belted us and we are trying to get one back here."
Equally Victorian assistant coach Kevin Sheedy believes the fact that Saturday night's match will mark the first occasion since 1999 that the once-feared Big V jumper has been seen at senior level will ensure passionate Melburnians get behind the game.
"The Vic guernsey hasn't been out and about since 1999 and this might be the only chance for this generation of players to wear the Big V because it might not happen again," Sheedy said.
"This match is a reward for Melbourne people who have waited ten years to see (Victoria play) and I would be disappointed if they didn't come out and support their own locals."
