Eagles the big winners

the way its attack misfired on grand final day - a high-quality developing key forward in Mitchell Brown at pick 15. Also drafted small forward Steven Motlop, the younger brother of Power dynamo Daniel, who has brilliant natural goal kicking ability and fantastic skills while the Cats also picked up versatile defender Tom Gillies from the Dandenong Stingrays and speedy rebounding defender Taylor Hunt.

Hawthorn: Rating: 6/10 - Few clubs have fared better in the draft in recent years than the Hawks but this year's crop is harder to assess given how low the Hawks were in the order. Their most interesting pick was 18-year-old Jordan Lisle at pick 50. The 195cm ruckman is the son of former North Melbourne ruckman Mark, who played 37 games from 1984-89. The Hawks continued their recent trend of going for height with fourth round pick Luke Lowden standing a massive 204cm while top pick Ryan Scheonmakers is a promising 194cm forward who has been likened to Sydney's Ryan O'Keefe, who the Hawks tried but failed to get during the trade period.

The club also secured Samuel Wright (pick 27), Liam Anthony (43), Nathan O'Keefe (59) and Warren Benjamin (71) with Wright set to add to the Roos already impressive array of clever forwards while Anthony, a goalkicking midfielder, comes from proven recruiting ground East Fremantle where was runner-up in their best and fairest this year.

Melbourne: Rating: 8/10 - The Demons had the prized number one draft pick and used it on future champion forward Jack Watts. The 17-year-old, who stands 196cm and starred for Vic Metro in this year's under 18 championships, has been likened in playing style to St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt and the Demons hope he will be the long-term replacement for retired great David Neitz. But while Watts dominated talk at this year's draft, the Demons used their lower picks effectively as well to bolster a list that finished on the bottom of the ladder this year.
