Goodwin stands firm

Goodwin stands by choice

20/07/2010 8:28 PM

Adelaide captain Simon Goodwin says he isn't considering reversing his decision to hang up the boots at the end of the year despite his excellent form in the past month.

Goodwin has been solid throughout the season but during Adelaide's run of four straight wins, the 33 year-old has been outstanding off half back; strong in defence and providing plenty of penetration launching the Crows into attack.

The 275-game veteran remains confident his time is up come season's end, saying he is 'content' with the direction of his career.

"Not at all, I know that my time is up and I'm ready to move on," he said on Tuesday.

"There was one thing that I wanted to get from the group and that was to play highly competitive footy at a consistent level and I've been able to do that for a period of time. I'm really content in where my career is headed and looking forward to the next stage in my life but at the same time I want to finish strongly."

Goodwin already appears to be laying the foundations for his next career move as a senior coach.

The captain usually leads a training session during the week and said he is surrounded by the perfect mentors.

"I've been really blessed to have Neil Craig and Charlie Walsh and guys like that at the club who are great mentors and teachers of coaching," he said.

"I feel that I'll use that and I feel very fortunate that the Adelaide footy club have been able to give me the opportunity in that area as well. I certainly owe a lot to the footy club and certainly those two guys in particular for helping me out."

Goodwin admitted though, it will be a while before he is prepared to take on a senior coaching role saying it is important to complete some form of an 'apprenticeship' to gain valuable experience.

"I don't think I'd step straight into senior coaching," he said.

"I think it's important that you do a little apprenticeship wherever that may be and when you're time is right and when you feel that you're right for a head position."

The dual premiership winner acknowledged he may have to leave the Crows' nest at the end of the year to win a coaching role, but said he would assess that decision at the end of the year.

"I would certainly be prepared to go anywhere but I will do that when the time is right and I'll assess that at the end of the year," he said.

"I think you have to pick an environment where you can learn best and learn to do your apprenticeship wherever it might take you. It would be naive to think the environment you're in is the only environment you need to be in."
