Essendon ruckman David Hille is anticipating spending more time up forward to help cover the loss of Scott Lucas who is expected to be sidelined for up to 10 weeks with a torn posterior cruciate ligament.
Speaking to the media before the club's recovery session at Windy Hill on Tuesday morning, Hille said the Bombers 'can't cover' for Lucas who was injured early in the club's big win over the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome on Easter Monday, and that several players are likely to be called on to fill the gap.
"It was a focus this year to get myself and Jason (Laycock) rotating forward through the forward line a little bit more than we had in the past couple of years," Hille said.
"I think that may have happened regardless of Scott's injury."
Hille nominated Courtney Johns as the nearest like-for-like replacement for Lucas, while adding that Adam McPhee and Nathan Lovett-Murray, who slotted four goals against the Kangaroos, were 'good options' up forward to keep the balance right.
"It's good to have pressure on the fringe of the team, but we do have some other guys coming back from injury … so it’s a good position for our team," he said.
"It keeps a lot of guys under pressure in the team and performing well."
Hille said everyone directly involved with Monday's win was delighted with the result, and that he was pleased with his own 12 disposal, seven mark, one goal and 13 hitout contribution.
"Obviously I wanted to perform better this year than I had last year - I was a little disappointed in myself," Hille said.
"I want to put my best foot forward and I think I've tried to do that over the pre-season and hopefully that continues throughout the games."
