Melbourne youngster Sam Blease will miss the remainder of the 2009 season after he injured his ankle at school on Thursday.
Blease, who was the Demons second pick in the national draft last year, was playing football with his friends during lunchtime and was tackled to the ground by a fellow student.
The 18-year-old fractured his fibula bone and won't be seen until the 2010 season.
General Manager of Football Operations at Melbourne Chris Connolly said the injury was a big blow for the youngster, but they believe he will still be a player of the future.
"This is obviously a setback, but we see Sam as a long term player for this club," he said.
"We will now begin to prepare him for the commencement of the 2010 pre-season."
