Kangas focus on 'road' kill

Kangas focus on 'road' kill

09/07/2007 1:03 PM

In-form forward Corey Jones has conceded the Kangaroos will need to improve on their indifferent interstate record if they're to beat the desperate Dockers at Subiaco on Sunday.

With the exception of their three 'home' games at Carrara, one of which was dropped to Adelaide, the Kangaroos are none-from-two interstate in 2007, having conceded victories to Port at AAMI Stadium in Round 2 and the Eagles at Subi in Round 10.

The Kangas lost both their matches at Subiaco last year but managed to take the points over Freo out west in 2004-05, and it's the lessons of these victories that Jones believes will hold the visitors in good stead against a Dockers outfit desperate to stay in finals contention.

"When they're at home they play very well, so we've got a tough ask but generally we go alright over there," Jones told the media at the club's Monday morning recovery following the Sunday twilight victory over Richmond.

"We had our chances against West Coast and didn't make the most of our opportunities. It will be a tough game but we’re all looking forward to it.

"I think we're eight points in front of Fremantle so it's a game that will shape the eight but we've just got to make sure that we just keep doing what we’ve been doing.

Jones agreed with coach Dean Laidley's assessment that there were significant lessons to be learned from the Brisbane Lions' upset victory over West Coast at Subiaco on Saturday night.

"The competition is that even, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing. If you're not switched on, that's what sides will do to you," Jones said.

"When we go out there we want to make sure that we’re ready to play."

Jones, who scored three important goals in the 25-point win over the Tigers, was full of praise for stand-in forward Drew Petrie whose six goals straight on Sunday took his tally to 13 in the past fortnight.

"Drew's had a great two weeks and it's good to watch and good to be a part of it," he said.

"I don't know what he's going off the field; I just hope he keeps it up."

"We went in favourite yesterday which is probably for the first time for the year and to win a game we probably should have is credit to the group."
