Lions fighting fit

Lions fighting fit

Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews admits his side could not be in better shape going into Saturday night's crunch game against the Kangaroos at the Gabba.

And not even the prospect of wet conditions is concerning Matthews ahead of a game which pits together two of the form sides of the competition with the Roos in sixth place and the Lions in eighth place after nine rounds.

The Lions are aiming for a third straight win and are coming off a 46-point demolition of St Kilda last week while a win over the Kangaroos will see Brisbane leapfrog Dean Laidley's team on the ladder.

And apart from veteran midfielder Nigel Lappin, who is still sidelined with an Achilles' injury, the Lions virtually have a full list to pick from in terms of their best 22.

"We are in pretty good shape and we will probably be unchanged again," Matthews said on Thursday.

"If you have a couple of weeks of being unchanged (in terms of team selection) it generally means the team has performed well so we are in good shape hopefully."

"And there is a few banging the door down (for selection) so that is a reflection on how guys are going."

"Our injury list is small by normal standards - we have only got about half a dozen players unavailable - and we have a lot of guys playing well in the reserves but not enough to push anyone out this week."

But despite his team's strong position Matthews is far from underestimating the Kangaroos, who seemingly every year get written off as a legitimate contender only to perform well.

"Perception and reality is not the same thing," Matthews said.

"The perception (with the Kangaroos) is they are not as good as they perform but they just keep on performing."

"They are ahead of us on the ladder and it happens in sport sometimes in that reputations can be overboard but they can also be the opposite as well (teams like the Kangaroos being perennially underrated)."

And as for the forecast of wet conditions in Brisbane on Saturday night, Matthews is unfazed.

"We have played quite well in the rain, it doesn't faze our blokes," he said.
