Lions to fire for Brown

Lions to fire for Brown

13/06/2008 6:09 PM

Brisbane players will use inspirational co-captain Jonathan Brown's 150-game milestone as motivation for their blockbuster encounter with the Western Bulldogs, according to midfielder Travis Johnstone.

Johnstone labelled triple-premiership forward Brown the best player in the game and revealed the Lions' desire to make it a memorable day for him at the MCG on Saturday.

"He's a huge part of our team and club and I think his 150th will probably help the whole team give a little bit extra," Johnstone told the media on Friday.

"He does so much for the team so we would like to reward him with something on such a huge milestone."

Johnstone, who switched to Brisbane from Melbourne at the end of last season, said he was in awe of Brown's dedication and team spirit.

"He's amazing. He's one of, if not the best, I have ever been involved with. Just everything he does and the way he plays and he's so selfless, too."

"He's just so level-headed with so much media on him. I think he's the No.1 player in the AFL."

Brown will have to carry more responsibility into the mouthwatering clash with the Dogs after leading goalkicker Daniel Bradshaw was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Johnstone nominated young key position prospect Mitch Clark to stand up in Bradshaw's absence.

"Hopefully it doesn't change our forward structure too much," Johnstone said.

"Those two have been pretty good for us. We get the ball into them and we know they are going to make a contest or mark it and kick a goal."

"I think maybe Mitch Clark or someone like that can fill that void. He's been up in the forward line and backline."

"If it is wet, it might be a benefit for us and we'll have a few more small players around."

Western Bulldogs forward Robert Murphy agreed Brown is the competition's supreme player.

Murphy threw a couple of names up when pressed who might get the unenviable job of guarding the Lions giant.

"I imagine Brian Lake would be a fair show. Tom Williams is another one," Murphy said.

"I think whoever it is will have their work cut out. He is probably the best player going. I think a lot of it will depend on how it goes in the midfield like it does most week."
