Richmond's No.3 pick in this year's AFL national draft, Dustin Martin, is looking forward to making an immediate impact for his new club next season.
After weeks of anticipation leading into the draft, the new Tiger said on Thursday night soon after being taken behind only Melbourne duo Tom Scully and Jack Trengove that it had been a long wait since draft camp 'and I just can't wait to get to training now'.
Martin, who was recruited from the Bendigo Pioneers, has been described as an attacking, balanced on-baller with strong foot skills but he is hopeful, rather than confident, of getting picked for Richmond's season-opener against Carlton in 2010.
"I just can't wait to get to training and get as fit as I can, and hopefully if I work hard I can get there Round 1," Martin said.
Having earned All-Australian honors at the national junior championship earlier this year, Martin has been working to give himself every chance to impress next year, following a program to prepare himself for his new career as an AFL footballer.
"My manager Ricky Nixon gave me a program, I think it was from Richmond, they gave me a bit of a program to follow so I've just been following that and trying to get as fit as I can leading into it," he added.
Having not had to endure as nervous a wait for draft night as some of his fellow draftees, because 'about a week ago Richmond came down to Bendigo and they told me they were going to take me with their pick', Martin is now looking forward to joining the other seven players taken by the Tigers.
"Richmond have got 10 picks so there's going to be a lot of youth there and it will be great to have a lot of young blokes around and new coaches and yeah (I) can't wait," said Martin of the young list being assembled at Punt Road.
And with other high draft picks Brett Deledio (No.1 in 2004) and Trent Cotchin (No.2 in 2007) already wearing the yellow and black, Martin is 'going to the club in the next couple of days so (I'm) just looking forward to that'.
