Options galore for Gold Coast

Options galore for Gold Coast

31/03/2009 4:37 PM

The Gold Coast Football Club has now officially been granted the AFL's 17th licence to join the competition in 2011 but who will be playing for the first new club to join the competition since Port Adelaide in 1997?

Well judging by the ever growing number of Queenslanders on AFL lists, the new club will have no shortage of players to approach about joining the new club - which will begin its life this year in Victoria's TAC Cup under 18 competition before progressing to the VFL in 2010 and then the AFL in 2011.

Former West Coast captain and Collingwood assistant coach Guy McKenna has already been appointed the new club's first coach, but who will be the first captain?

St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt, who hails from Southport right in the heart of the new Gold Coast's team's territory, will naturally be the No.1 recruiting target for the new club but there are numerous other quality players with Queensland links amongst the current 16 clubs.

The new Gold Coast team will have access to some of the game's best young talent, via the national draft, before its AFL entry in 2011 and no doubt its first AFL team in two years time will contain many youngsters that are currently unheard of.

And the new club may also be able to lure players from existing teams that don't hail from Queensland originally.

But here is how a possible Gold Coast line-up might look just by the new club recruiting players from existing AFL clubs that have Queensland links - including those Brisbane Lions players that are originally from Queensland.

B: Andrew Raines (Richmond), Daniel Merrett (Brisbane Lions), Daniel Pratt (North Melbourne).
HB: Gavin Urquhart (North Melbourne), Tom Williams (Western Bulldogs), Sam Gilbert (St Kilda)
C: Dayne Beams (Collingwood), David Armitage (St Kilda), Joel MacDonald (Brisbane Lions)
HF: Brad Miller (Melbourne), Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda), Ricky Petterd (Melbourne)
F: David Hale (North Melbourne), Kurt Tippett (Adelaide), Michael Osborne (Hawthorn)
Rucks: Brent Renouf (Hawthorn), Scott Harding (Brisbane Lions)
Rover: Courtenay Dempsey (Essendon)
Interchange (from): Luke McGuane (Richmond), Shaun Hampson (Carlton), Brad Moran (Adelaide), Jesse White (Sydney), Jake Spencer (Melbourne), Brendan Whitecross (Hawthorn)
