While most struggling sides could think of nothing worse than another road trip at this stage of the season, Richmond believes Saturday night's 'home' game on the Gold Coast against Adelaide might actually work in the Tigers' favour.
The Tigers have sacrificed home-state advantage against the Crows for a one-off guaranteed payday of around $400,000 at Carrara in what will be the last of three games staged on the Gold Coast this season and the last game played at the ground before it is extensively renovated ahead of the entry of the Gold Coast team into the AFL in 2011.
It is the first time the Tigers have ever sold a home game interstate and while the move backfired on Carlton earlier this season - when the Blues suffered a shock loss to Fremantle at Carrara - Richmond is hoping the move will prove a winner on the field as well as off the field.
While the game would have almost certainly lost money for the club had it been staged in Melbourne - due to the likelihood of a poor crowd against non-Victorian opposition with the Tigers struggling with just three wins from 13 games - Richmond is guaranteed a hefty financial return regardless of how many show up at Carrara.
And while the Tigers have had to give up home ground advantage, the club's form on the road this season has actually been far superior to its form in Melbourne.
In three interstate trips the Tigers have beaten Fremantle in Perth and suffered unlucky narrow defeats at Port Adelaide and Sydney.
In contrast their heaviest defeats this season have all come in Victoria - where they have won just twice from 10 matches - including recent 68- and 56-point losses to the Western Bulldogs and St Kilda respectively at Etihad Stadium.
Richmond defender Alex Rance says playing a home game interstate holds no fears for the Tigers and at this stage of the club's development - with so many youngsters now in the side since Jade Rawlings has taken over as caretaker coach following the axing of Terry Wallace - is also beneficial for the team.
"It always creates a bit more camaraderie and a bit more of a bond (between the players) when you get away," Rance said.
"You are around each other a lot more, so travel definitely creates a bit more of that team atmosphere."
And the Tigers this season have appeared to relish their interstate trips as it has been the only time the team has been able to escape the constant negative scrutiny on their performances following the disastrous start to a year, in which so much was expected of them, under Wallace.
"Once we get into our little zone and we are very much team focused, that is when we play our best football," Rance said.
It will be the Tigers' first official home-and-away game at Carrara since playing the Brisbane Bears there in 1991, although the team did play a pre-season game at the ground earlier this season.
However Adelaide - which has beaten Richmond in 11 of 12 meetings this decade (only losing the infamous 'basketball crap' game at Docklands in 2006) - has played at Carrara in two of the past three seasons in firstly beating Melbourne in 2006 and then the Kangaroos in 2007.
