Port gets physical

29/07/2009 5:46 PM

Port Adelaide has shamed the bulk of its players and challenged them to compete harder by putting them through extra physical drills at AAMI Stadium on Wednesday.

The concluding stages of the Power's training session resembled a gladiator initiation as players smashed each other with bags, wrestled, absorbed or laid repetitive tackles, tried to burst through packs and yelled as one while completing sit-ups and push-ups.

A group of experienced players were exempt from the drills, including Dean Brogan, Troy Chaplin, Steve Salopek and Jacob Surjan, who are carrying what the club are describing as minor injuries. But most of the squad finished the session bruised and battered.

Midfielder David Rodan, also missed the final exercises, admitted the extra work was for those who performed poorly during the team's 70-point loss to Adelaide. Premiership players Brendon Lade and Toby Thurstans were among the large group under the pump.

"Those guys there, I think they are just some of the blokes that we felt possibly let the team down on the weekend," Rodan said.

"They just decided to do a few extras, just to push through and they work hard during the week so hopefully they can bring it out of themselves on the weekend."

"Just the fundamentals of our game. You've got to get in there, get the hard ball and then work our way from there, we sort of maybe went away a little bit from that on the weekend."

Rodan, who has signed a new three-year deal with the Power, said the team's more rugged approach would also put them in good stead for their clash with Hawthorn on Sunday.

"They've got a great midfield. We know that if we are going to compete and win that we've got to compare with the Mitchells, Sewells and Hodges in there, so we definitely have to bring our best," he said.

"And I think the more training we do like that the better."

"The boys are obviously hurting and working hard on the track. I think it puts you in the mindset that you've got to come out and give your best every week and I'm sure the boys are looking forward to the Hawks this week and hopefully we can deliver our best."

One of the Power's highlights this season was a 30-point victory over the Hawks at the MCG in Round 4. Rodan said the players would be reviewing that game but admitted things had changed dramatically since then.

"They have played some better football since we played them then, their players are up and running. We are just going to have to play our football fast, exciting and create and see how we go from there," he said.
