Mark Williams says Port Adelaide is still trying to find the ideal level of aggression in its game.
Despite suffering another heavy loss to the Cats on the weekend, Williams said he was impressed with how his players 'attacked' Geelong.
However, he did admit their physical approach needed fine tuning.
"We weren't perfect at it but we've improved certainly on what we've dished up in the last few weeks. If we spend the next 10 weeks getting better and better at that we'll be very happy," he said.
"We gave a lot of free kicks away and most of them were there in reflection. You talk one week about being soft, the next week about being too hard and the next week being soft so we haven't got the mix exactly right.
"There's always a fine line for every club."
The loss to the Cats leaves the Power with a 4-8 record. Finding a place in the eight is unlikely but the team from Alberton hasn't given up on playing a part in the finals.
"Our selection will be firmly based on us making the finals and we'll select exactly that way while we have the opportunity to make the finals," Williams said.
But the Power coach all but admitted the team wouldn't be able to improve on its efforts last season.
"It's certainly not going to be our premiership year right at this moment," he said.
One area Port needs to dramatically improve is its attack which struggled against a miserly Geelong.
Justin Westhoff is the forward under greatest pressure to retain his spot and Williams said he'd already considered dropping the 199cm youngster.
"We've spent a long time talking about Westy. He does so many good things, his possessions and his marking are right up there with last year but certainly his kicking for goal isn't, so that's the one area that's down," he said.
"We've toyed with the fact do you drop him, have a few weeks back at Central (in the SANFL) and get some real confidence back. Or do we keep persisting with him because we know he's our future?"
Despite the Power's grim situation, Williams still displayed a sense of humour at the club's Monday press conference.
"When I was fatter I used to win a lot more games so I'm thinking of putting a few more kilos," he said.
