Power slam disappointing Dees

Power slam disappointing Dees

23/08/2008 6:55 PM

Port Adelaide has broken a four-game losing streak and almost certainly assured Melbourne of a wooden spoon finish after recording an emphatic 78-point victory at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The Power led by 48-points at half time and then crushed the opposition with an exciting eight-goal final quarter; the home side eventually winning 18.21 (129) to 7.9 (51).

It was the South Australian side's sixth win of the season, taking it into 13th position. The Demons, though, look almost certain to finish on the bottom of the ladder unless they score a landslide of goals against the Tigers next week and the Eagles lose both of their remaining games by plenty.

The clash never reached great heights, resembling a training session at times and was played in front of the lowest AAMI Stadium crowd of the season (18,875). But the Power will no doubt try and draw some positives from a rare victory at home.

Peter Burgoyne, who's been playing for his career in the past month, returned to his best form with 37 possessions and two goals.

Fellow veteran Brendon Lade also showed he can still contribute to the team cause while first-year players Matthew Westhoff and Marlon Motlop gained valuable confidence against a disappointing opponent.

Daniel Motlop put in a flashy and effortless performance, kicking five goals while premiership players Dom Cassisi and Kane Cornes were classy contributors in the midfield.

It was a disappointing effort by the Dees, with Simon Buckley, Paul Wheatley and Brad Green delivering high possession but not overly damaging performances.

Daniel Motlop got the Power off to the perfect start by kicking his 50th goal of the season in the second minute of the contest.

He went on to kick another two majors for the term as the home side's midfield bombarded their attacking 50-metres.

Peter Burgoyne was also amongst the action and chipped in with a couple of goals and was a part of dominant midfield combination that moved the ball swiftly through the centre.

And, it was this run that help set up a 36-point buffer at the first change.

Both sides started the second term with plenty of enthusiasm but average finishing skills.

Seven points were scored before Motlop chimed in again from a mark and set shot.

The Demons' improved work rate resulted in a Cameron Bruce major midway through the term but the hosts remained in control. Cassisi and Cornes both collected 20 possessions for the half and kept the ball moving
