Power turned on

Power turned on

04/07/2009 6:40 PM

Port Adelaide has snapped a two-game losing streak and exorcised some of its demons from 2008 after beating Brisbane by 48 points at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

Leading by just seven points at three-quarter time, the Power stormed home with a six-goal final term to win 19.14 (128)to 11.14 (80).

In the teams' clash last season, Port surrendered a 47-point buffer to lose the game and a lot of respect from other AFL sides.

But there was no repeat of that performance this time around, with the Power leading from early in the second term and never looking back from that point.

The result was also a big tick of approval for coach Mark Williams, who was re-signed during the week.

Port's specialist forwards Brett Ebert, Justin Westhoff, Robbie Gray and Warren Tredrea kicked 12 of the 19 goals but it was the overall team effort which would've pleased supporters.

Alipate Carlile and Toby Thurstans were honest performers against Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw while Troy Chaplin was effective as a loose man in defence.

In the midfield, ruck duo Brendan Lade and Dean Brogan proved too strong for Mitch Clark, while David Rodan had 12 clearances.

Kane Cornes' battle with Simon Black and Dom Cassisi's clash with Daniel Rich were also important.

Brisbane surged several times during the contest but it wasn't at its best in a disappointing performance for a side striving for a top-four position.

For the Lions Jed Adcock had 29 touches, while Justin Sherman's first half was dynamic.

Port Adelaide jumped out of the blocks with Westhoff kicking two goals in the opening four minutes of the clash while Peter Burgoyne was busy in the midfield.

The Power won plenty of clearances and played on at every occasion but their free-flowing play was littered with shocking turnovers.

Brisbane's disposal wasn't top rate either but it improved as the first quarter continued.

There was no pressure on Rhan Hooper when he kicked the team's first goal on the run at 13 minutes and when Bradshaw slotted one from close range the visitors held a two-point lead at the first change.

The match swung in momentum during the second quarter. Port reclaimed the lead in the opening minute and booted the opening four majors - Tredrea's scramble and kick at the teeth of goal pushing the lead out to 19 points.

But in a flash the Lions were back in action with Bradshaw and Brown bobbing up to bring the margin back to
