Preview: Port Adelaide v Melbourne
08/04/2009 9:41 PM
VENUE & TIME: AAMI Stadium, Sunday 12 April, 1.10pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 18, Port Adelaide 10, Melbourne 8
LAST TIME: Port Adelaide 18.21 (129) def Melbourne 7.9 (51), Round 21, 2008 at AAMI Stadium.
WALKING WOUNDED: Port Adelaide's tall forward Justin Westhoff has broken his foot and will be out of action for at least four weeks. Dean Brogan is back from suspension while a more positive evening at the tribunal means Daniel Motlop will be available for his 100th game. For the Demons, Simon Buckley (groin) and Jack Grimes (back) will spend another week on the injury list, Daniel Bell (thumb) and Austin Wonaeamirri (hamstring) need a further fortnight of rehabilitation while ruckman Mark Jamar won't resume from a foot injury for another five weeks.
FORM: Port Adelaide's convincing home win against Essendon was quickly forgotten when West Coast jumped the Power in Round 2. The Eagles kicked the first three goals of the contest and were never headed by a Power line-up second to the ball and sloppy under pressure. A 10-minute burst, in which they wasted half a dozen shots on goal, was Port's only surge in forgettable trip west. For the second week in a row Melbourne threatened for a half before fading after the long break. Last weekend the Demons shocked Collingwood with their slick ball movement and entries into attack but alas that exciting play couldn't be sustained.
WHO'S HOT:
Last week the Power was well beaten all over the ground but defenders Steven Salopek and Nathan Krakouer should give supporters hope over the coming weeks. The duo both collected more than 20 possessions each and provided plenty of drive from under-siege backline. For the Demons, Brad Green was one of the team's frontrunners when his team was doing well against Collingwood. He kicked three goals, collected 23 possessions and should be hard to stop down at AAMI Stadium.
WE THINK:
Port Adelaide was brought back to earth by West Coast and criticism from the media suggesting its players are big-headed should fire them up for this Easter Sunday clash. The inclusion of Brogan is a big plus for the side while Motlop will be keen to pull out some milestone tricks for his 100th game. The Power have been talking up their fitness this year and should be able to breakaway in the second half but if they are second to the ball, like they were against the Eagles, they might be out for a nasty shock against the Demons. Melbourne has played in halves in its two games this year and it's only a matter of time before this young side offers up a complete performance. They'll be competitive but Port needs to respond and will do so in front of a small AAMI Stadium crowd. Port by 36 points.
