St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt has enhanced his growing reputation by winning a record fifth Trevor Barker Award as the club's best and fairest player.
Riewoldt, who led the Saints to a 20-2 win-loss record for the season before falling just short of Geelong in last week's grand final, pipped defender Brendon Goddard for the honour with midfielder Leigh Montagna in third spot.
Riewoldt's victory takes him past club games record holder Robert Harvey and club champion Bill Cubbins, who each won four best and fairest.
Riewoldt also won the Trevor Barker Award in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007.
Recruited from Southport in Queensland, Riewoldt has played 182 AFL matches, including 24 this season in which he booted 78 goals and took 231 marks.
He was selected in the All Australian side for the fourth time this year – with the additional honour of being named captain.
Voting for the Trevor Barker Award is based on allocating players a score on a scale of 1-10, with five members of the coaching panel independently submitting their votes after each round.
The final voting saw Riewoldt finish with 642 votes, Goddard with 638 votes and Montagna with 635 votes. Making up the top five places were Nick Dal Santo (618) and Lenny Hayes (603).
Defender Zac Dawson took out the most promising new player award, midfielder Clint Jones was awarded the Robert Harvey most professional player award, while St Kilda retirees Max Hudghton and Jarryd Allen were also recognised for their services to the club.
