Austin Wonaeamirri's match-winning four-goal haul in Melbourne's come-from-behind victory over Fremantle on Sunday has earned the 19-year-old the Round 7 nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star award.
In only his fifth AFL match the midfielder/forward gathered 15 possessions, and it was his fourth goal which put Melbourne in front for the first time.
Coach Dean Bailey said Wonaeamirri played a big part in the Demons' breakthrough win.
"Austin has been very professional with the way he conducts himself and has worked really hard since arriving at Melbourne as a rookie," said Bailey.
"He was given an opportunity in Round 3 earlier this year and has grabbed it with both hands."
"Not only did Aussie's four goals contribute to the win on Sunday, but his forward line pressure and tackling was exceptional."
From Melville Island, Wonaeamirri played for St Mary's in Darwin and Norwood in the SANFL.
He represented the Northern Territory in the NAB AFL 2007 Under 18 Championships and was named the Territory's most valuable player.
He came to Melbourne with selection number 16 in the 2008 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
Wonaeamirri was promoted off the Rookie list to replace Jack Grimes in Round 3.
