It's not often that Jarryd Roughead has upstaged his higher profile key forward partner Lance 'Buddy' Franklin during their five years together at Hawthorn but that is exactly what will happen on Saturday when Roughead becomes the first of the pair to bring up the 100-game milestone.
Roughead and Franklin - not to mention rugged midfielder Jordan Lewis - were all top 10 picks for the Hawks in the same draft back in 2004, at a time when the club was at its lowest ebb since first emerging as an AFL power in 1961.
Five years on and the trio are all premiership players and now all approaching the 100-game milestone with Roughead the first to bring up the century against Geelong at the MCG on Saturday - while Franklin (97 games) and Lewis (96 games) should bring up their 'tons' before the end of the home and away season.
Roughead admitted on Tuesday that it was nice to be the first of the class of 2004 to bring up the milestone as he finally gets the chance to put one over two of his closest mates.
"It's all right to get the 100 first out of the three of us - it's fairly good I reckon," the affable Roughead joked.
The trio have achieved so much in such a short space of time but one of the most underrated aspects of their development to date has been their durability with all three players rarely injured while Lewis is only slightly behind the other two in terms of games played because of a couple of trips to the tribunal.
"When we have been injured it has usually been pre-season so we have been able to get back pretty quickly," he said.
Roughead admits it is a strange feeling now being one of the more experienced players in the side and he will be one of three players to bring up milestones on Saturday along with skipper Sam Mitchell - the club's longest-serving current player who plays game number 150 - while midfielder Brad Sewell will also play his 100th game.
"Coming to the club at one of its more down times (at the end of 2004 when the club had just finished second last and had axed coach Peter Schwab) - you have to give credit to 'Clarko' (coach Alastair Clarkson who was appointed at the same time as Roughead, Franklin and Lewis arrived at the club) in playing us young kids straight away."
Last year Roughead booted a highly respectable 75 goals during the Hawks' premiership year but was overshadowed by the brilliant Franklin, who kicked 113 in becoming the first player to bring up a century of goals in a home and away season since Tony Lockett in 1998.
The pair's combined tally of 188 goals for the season was the best performance by two players from the same club in the same season since Richmond's Michael Roach and Kevin Bartlett kicked 196 between them during the Tigers' last premiership year in 1980.
Roughead admits it has been a privilege playing alongside the most exciting key forward in the game over the past five years.
"Playing with him every week is probably the best job in the world because you get the best seat in the house," Roughead said playing next to Franklin.
"And it's just good each week to get out there and play with your good mates."
As for his own form this year, Roughead admits he has been slightly down on last year yet he has still kicked 46 goals in 16 games compared to 52 at this time last year.
"This year I have probably been a little bit down on last year and probably a little bit inconsistent," he said.
"I suppose I have been a bit like the team in that the last few weeks I am getting a couple of kicks and getting some shots on goal but I am probably not taking them and kicking as many as I should be."
