Saints v Kangaroos snippets

10/06/2007 5:51 PM

Turning point: The Saints had closed to within nine points halfway through the final term and appeared to have the momentum when their revival ended as they self-destructed from a kick-in. Nick Dal Santo was the player that bought the ball back into play but there was little wrong with his kick which carried just outside the 50 metre defensive zone. But not only was Ed Lower able to take an uncontested mark but even worse he was then allowed to play on as Brad Howard failed to man the mark and kick a much-needed steadying goal on the run for the Roos.

Star Man: Corey Jones (Kangaroos) - When the game was there to be won in the first half it was the Kangaroos' goalsneak who proved the difference between the sides. Jones booted three goals in the opening term and then set up another one for Jess Sinclair early in the second and by that stage the Roos had a four goal lead. And that lead would prove sufficient all day, despite the Saints' last quarter fightback, and it was fitting that it should be Jones who kicked the sealer with his fourth goal at the 20 minute mark of the final term.

Classic Grab: It came late but it proved crucial as rapidly improving Kangaroos' ruckman Hamish McIntosh rose high to pull in a fine contested mark in front of Saints' full-back Max Hudghton in the final quarter. McIntosh then converted accurately from 35 metres to give his team a 21 point lead midway through the final term.

What A Goal: In a game devoid of highlights and goals, it was left to Saints' youngster Sam Gilbert to provide a rare moment of class in the second term. Gilbert, who was playing just his ninth game, received a handpass on the run and without stopping his momentum produced a great finish on his non-preferred left foot from 45 metres out.

Absolute Shocker: St Kilda's Brett Voss got the ball when he least wanted it late in the first quarter and was lucky to escape without serious injury after gaining possession while concussed following an earlier blow. Voss had just been collected heavily by Kangaroos' defender Kasey Green and was being assisted from the field by two trainers when suddenly he found himself in the vicinity of the ball. Voss took possession and somehow managed to get a kick away without copping
