Slattery back on his feet

Slattery back on his feet

24/06/2008 1:09 PM

Fearless Essendon defender Henry Slattery will not change his courageous ways despite being knocked out in a sickening collision with Carlton star Brendan Fevola on Sunday.

Slattery was concussed when collected by Fevola's knee as the 22-year-old went back with the flight of the ball in the opening quarter of the Bombers' 35-point win at the MCG.

The heavy hit left Slattery lying motionless on the turf as his anxious mother and girlfriend watched from the stands.

It resulted in an injured cheekbone which will sideline him from this Sunday's trip to face Fremantle at Subiaco but Slattery is expected to be available for Essendon's following match against Brisbane on July 12.

Slattery, speaking at Windy Hill on Tuesday morning, said he pulled up 'pretty well'.

"I can't remember the actual incident. Looking at it, it didn't look too good," he said.

"But I think the fact he kneed me in the chest before he got me in the face was a good thing."

"If it was any higher I would have been in a bit of trouble. I would have had to have surgery for sure."

"It's in a spot where I could only miss two weeks and it will heal naturally."

Slattery said if confronted with a similar situation on his return he would attack the contest the same way.

"It's just one of those freak things that happens and it doesn't happen all the time," he said.

"You sort of take that on board but that's footy, that is why we all play the game. I would definitely do it again."

"I didn't really think too much of it at the time. You want to help your fellow backmen out when you are playing, you want to play as a tight group."

"The more you work for each other the better. I just wanted to help 'Fletch' (Dustin Fletcher) out and it's just the things that you do, you don't think too much about it at the time."

"It's spur of the moment. I like any challenge so I would do anything really."

Slattery said Fevola had called him after the game to wish him well in his recovery.

"He basically said he felt a bit sick about what happened and that he was sorry and he hopes I get better soon which was very nice," Slattery said.
