Thompson: Eagles in for torrid time

Thompson: Eagles in for torrid time

24/08/2008 6:42 PM

Geelong is planning to round off its preparation for the finals by giving cellar-dweller West Coast the 'hardest day they've ever had in their life' when the two teams clash next Saturday at Skilled Stadium.

Cats coach Mark Thompson delivered the ominous warning after watching his team turn in a 'workmanlike' performance to defeat its likely opponent in the first week of the finals, North Melbourne, by 33 points on Sunday.

Thompson wants the Cats to show the 15th-placed Eagles no mercy so that his players do not develop bad habits on the eve of their finals campaign.

Should the Cats deliver on their coach's word, a repeat of their 135-point drubbing over the Eagles in Round 13 and the 116-point thrashing of Melbourne a fortnight ago is on the cards.

"I don't like getting into bad habits," Thompson said.

"I think that's one of those things that we've stressed up on the guys. That we just want to play the sort of footy on a consistent basis and not fall into the traps of playing lazy football that's uncaring and dishonest."

"I know they (West Coast) haven't got much of a team but we want to give them the hardest day they've ever had in their life."

The Cats will enter their Round 22 clash with an embarrassment of riches at the selection table.

Late withdrawals James Kelly and Mathew Stokes will both be available, while their replacements Brent Prismall and Travis Varcoe both did little wrong against the Kangaroos.

Boom youngster Tom Hawkins impressed in the VFL, kicking six goals in a best-on-ground effort, to keep the pressure on the incumbent Tom Lonergan, who took eight marks and kicked one goal in the seniors.

Despite not being threatened by the second most in-form team of the competition, Thompson was not entirely satisfied with the Cats' win, describing it as 'probably the worst we've kicked the ball in a long while'.

"You can't blame last week's game on any part of that. We've got eight days to recover. We should have recovered. We played fit guys and they should have been better," he said.

"Like I said, it wasn't our best day in the office but it certainly wasn't our worst."

"It was just a workmanlike effort against a pretty good team, a pretty good result."
