Vic Metro take out title

Vic Metro take out title

09/07/2008 6:33 PM

Victoria Metro finished the National Under-18 Championships undefeated after a 29-point win over Western Australia at the Telstra Dome on Wednesday.

The final match of the carnival was an entertaining affair, with a number of potential top-10 draft picks on show.

Metro led at every change, and handled everything Western Australia threw at them in the final quarter to run out 14.9 (93) to 9.10 (64) winners.

The Victorians' tall forward line proved too much for the Western Australian defence to handle, with big men Tyrone Vickery, Shaun McKernan and Jack Watts, who won the Larke Medal for best player in Division One, all kicking multiple goals.

Vickery in particular was impressive, taking several strong contested marks as well as rucking well.

Mitchell Banner worked hard in the middle racking up 28 possessions and kicking two goals, while Sam Blease's two running goals from the wing were eye-catching.

For Western Australia it was a different story, with none of their forwards able to provide a focal point.

Chris Yarran was its only multiple goal kicker with three, and it was he who nearly sparked a comeback in the last quarter, getting WA within 22 points after trailing by 40 at the final change before Metro kicked away.

Nicholas Naitanui, the much talked about Western Australian ruckman, dominated around the clearances, but wasn't as effective around the ground as he has been in earlier matches.

In the first match of the triple header, South Australia easily accounted for NSW/ACT by 80 points.

South Australia led at every turn, and despite a brief third-quarter comeback from the Rams, cruised to a 20.12 (132) to 8.4 (52) victory.

Lewis Johnston and Luke Tapscott both kicked four for the Croweaters and Hamish Hartlett, younger brother of Carlton's Adam, impressed with 24 possessions.

Then Vic Country finished their competition in style with a 98-point demolition of Tasmania.

The Victorians kicked 15 goals to three in the second half to defeat Tassie 22.6 (138) to 6.4 (40).

Country had winners all over the field, with John Butcher kicking five goals, and Jamie Sheehan, Ryan McKenzie and Sam Hughes all booting three.

Mitch Robinson was Tasmania's best player with 24 touches, while Aaron Cornelius played a lone hand up forward kicking four goals.

VIC METRO 14.9 (93)
WESTERN AUSTRALIA 9.10 (64)
