The No.1 pick at Saturday's National Draft, Jack Watts was given a crash course in history when he was formally inducted to the Melbourne Football Club on Monday by club greats Ron Barassi and Jim Stynes.
In the grand setting of the Long Room at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Watts was presented with the No.4 guernsey which is considered every bit as significant at Melbourne as Barassi's famous No.31.
The No.4 was worn by perhaps the club's most influential figure, Norm Smith, and has been carried into battle in recent years by the likes of Peter Giles, Brent Grgic and Ben Holland.
Watts said he was proud to be given the No.4 which he also wore as captain of Victoria at this year's National Under-18 Championships.
"Throughout the Under-18 Championships I wore No.4," Watts said.
"Personally, the Under-18 Championship was my stepping stone to this and that's where I became known."
"I'm just privileged and honoured to have this opportunity."
Watts said he was settling in well at Melbourne, had received dozens of welcome calls from his new team-mates and had been given a first-hand account of what's expected from the club's top selection at last year's draft, Cale Morton.
School will take priority for the 17-year-old Brighton Grammar student for at least the next week, but after that his attention will turn fully to preparing himself for his debut season in the AFL in 2009.
Melbourne chief executive Cameron Schwab said it was significant that the club's top two selection at Saturday's draft, Watts and Eastern Ranges midfielder, Sam Blease, are year 11 students.
"We're talking about a club with 150 years of history and tradition," Schwab said.
"We're talking about heritage, and these guys represent hope."
"As the club regenerates itself, it's putting it's faith in young men all over again."
"Part of what we're trying to do here is to recognise that as significant as it is in drafting a young player to wear the No.4 jumper, he represents the hope but he also represents the heritage of the club as well."
