Fremantle coach Mark Harvey believes his young, undermanned side showed in its 15-point loss to Carlton it will be a force to be reckoned with sooner rather than later.
Without injured skipper Matthew Pavlich and hard-nut Dean Solomon looking on after he was internally suspended for a late-night drinking session, Harvey was forced to field six first-year players against the Blues on Sunday afternoon at Subiaco.
Harvey's youngsters didn't let him down in the first half either as Fremantle blitzed Carlton early on, establishing a 36-point lead just after quarter-time.
But as the match wore on, Harvey said the lack of seasoned Dockers took its toll, as Carlton swamped Fremantle in the possession count and inside-50s, taking the ball forward 18 more times than its opponents during the second half.
And, the weight of numbers finally told on the scoresheet too as the Blues kicked seven goals to two in the final quarter, leaving Fremantle to contemplate a seventh consecutive loss.
"I think we're the only side, along with possibly Melbourne that's carrying six first year players in their team," Harvey said after the match.
"We haven't got the availability of seasoned players and playmakers at the moment (and) Carlton ran over the top of us ... it's a common pattern at the moment."
"I think that we can play some really exciting football (but) at this particular stage, it's a half really."
"(But) the capabilities of these guys being able to do that will hold us in good stead going forward and once we can do it for those four quarters, I think we're going to see a different side to our team."
Harvey said the shared experience of playing in the side and contesting with high quality players would quicken Fremantle's evolution.
"I think what you're seeing is the experience that we're giving these guys when they're in the team to start to play together, go through some tough times like we are at the moment, we'll see the benefit out of that next year," Harvey said.
"But at the moment ... we're plugging holes regularly and we're finding that the opposition, the more seasoned midfielders, are tearing us apart as the game wears on."
Harvey was particularly pleased with the efforts of second gamer Hayden Ballantyne who looked set to electrify the crowd with three first-half goals before fading after half-time. He also singled out ruckman Zach Clarke for praise, while Greg Broughton earned 31-possessions and looks increasingly solid
