Aussie tennis hopes extinguished

15/08/2008 7:41 AM

The Australian tennis campaign at the Olympics has come to an end with both the Men's and Women's Doubles teams bowing out on Friday morning.

Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione lost their quarter-final encounter with top-seeded American pair Bob and Mike Bryan in straight sets 6-4 6-3 while Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs put up a bit more of a fight in their match-up with fourth-seeded Spaniards Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual who ultimately needed three sets to overcome the Aussie duo 4-6 6-4 6-4.

The Bryans were dominant on serve against Hewitt and Guccione, winning 86 percent of points on their first serve and 63 percent of points on their second serve as opposed to the Australians' 66 and 40 percent respectively.

This statistic was underscored by the fact that the Americans had a total of six break-point opportunities for the match, of which they converted four, while Hewitt and Guccione could only manage one break point (albeit a converted one) for the entire 52 minutes.

However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for the Bryans as the Aussies got out to a flyer in the first set to claim a 4-1 lead before allowing the victors to win the last five games of the set.

The US team stormed home in the second set as well after trailing 2-3 to win the last four games and book its place in the final four.

In the end, the Bryans won 59 points to 39 in what turned out to be a comprehensive victory and will now face either Swiss pair Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka or Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Stosur and Stubbs were involved in more of an arm wrestle than their male compatriots as their clash with Garrigues and Pascual lasted 119 minutes.

The Aussie women claimed the first set 6-4, after trailing 2-4, on the back of a dominant first-serve display - they won 71 percent of points when they didn't record a fault - and their efficiency with break points, winning two from two.

The Spaniards forced the match into a decisive third set as they fought back in the second, winning it 6-4 and never allowing Stosur and Stubbs to take the lead for its entirety.

The final set was a much tighter affair than the previous two and with the set tied up at 4-4, Garrigues and Pascual recorded a crucial break of the Aussies' serve to take a 5-4 lead and never looked back.

The Spaniards won the match on their serve, winning 62 percent of first service points compared to the Aussies' 59 and winning 63 percent of second service points compared to the Aussies' 54.

The winners will now meet Americans Lindsay Davenport and Liezel Huber in the quarter-finals.
