Tigers finish off win

Tigers finish off win

19/12/2008 10:19 AM

Tasmania had to wait just five balls on the fourth day before completing a remarkable outright victory against Queensland in their Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield clash at Bellerive Oval on Friday.

Requiring just three runs for the win, after torrential rain brought an abrupt end to proceedings on day three, David Dawson hit a boundary through cover off the last ball of Ryan Harris' 12th over to end the match.

James Hopes (3-13) provided the highlight for the Bulls after he combined with wicketkeeper Chris Hartley three times late on the third day to be Queensland's leading wicket-taker.

George Bailey (31) and Dawson (6) were the not out batsmen but the Tigers had the stunning day-three performance of their bowlers, especially Luke Butterworth, to thank which turned the contest on its head and delivered six precious points to the Apple Isle.

Just hours after Tasmania conceded first-innings points to Queensland on the third morning when it fell short of the Bulls' first-innings total by just 16 runs, a Butterworth-inspired Tigers attack required only 45.3 overs to skittle the visitors' meek batting order for just 93 in the second innings.

After having Queensland on the ropes early in its second innings at 3-32, Butterworth tore the heart out of the Bulls by reducing them to an amazing 7-41 - they lost 4-0 after lunch at one stage.

Clint Perren, James Hopes, Chris Simpson and Lee Carseldine (who was dismissed by Hilfenhaus) all departed in the space of five overs as Butterworth went on the rampage and ended up with figures of 5-13 from 11.3 overs.

Chris Hartley (14) and Ryan Harris (16) managed to stem the flow of wickets momentarily as they put on 30 runs for the eighth wicket but it wasn't long before they joined the aforementioned quartet back in the pavilion.

The result means the Tigers' hopes of a final berth are well and truly alive as they move to within two points of the second-placed Bulls.
