Blues dig deep

Blues dig deep when it matters

25/01/2009 7:45 AM

For a man that thought he would miss out on the Twenty20 Big Bash Final in order to make way for New Zealander Brendon McCullum, man-of-the-match Ben Rohrer cut a relaxed figure when he strode to the crease with his side in a deep hole.

The clean-hitting left-hander arrived at the crease following the loss of two quick wickets and promptly wacked an unbeaten 45 off 20 to seal victory.

Quizzed on his nonchalant knock after the game, the 27-year-old credited the Blues laid-back ethos for his scintillating display.

"Our team motto's been just to relax and enjoy ourselves and that's what the whole team's done and it's worked for us in the last few games, so I just went out there with the same sort of attitude," a delighted Rohrer said.

The dynamic lefty's treatment of Bryce McGain and Jon Holland proved pivotal, but Rohrer revealed he was just hoping to see the Bushrangers' spin-twins out of the attack on a wicket conducive to slow bowling.

"On that wicket it's quite slow and has a bit in it for the spinners so we thought we'd get through them and hopefully get one boundary an over and we might be right, so luckily we got a few more than that," he said.

A delighted Simon Katich praised Rohrer's ability to hold his nerve under extreme pressure.

"It was a great innings, to get 40-odd of 20 balls in that situation was outstanding, and the experience of Dom Thornely with him in that partnership got us over the line," Katich said.

He added: "I thought young Phil Hughes was outstanding at the top of the order for us given that he'd been out for a week with a hip injury so look it was just a great team effort."

"It was a fantastic game of cricket, it kept see-sawing and credit to our guys there at the end -Ben Rohrer and Dom Thornely - it was a fantastic partnership to win the game for us."

Katich was also generous in his praise of the Bushrangers.

"They've shown over the last (four) years they've been outstanding in this form of the game and to keep the pressure on right to the last ball just showed what sort of character they're made of," he said.

Victorian opener Rob Quiney also had a night to remember striking a whirlwind 91 off just 56 deliveries which included eight sixes, to hand his side the ascendancy at the halfway stage.

After the match, Quiney conceded his knock was particularly pleasing given the enormity of the occasion.

"Very happy considering I made a few 20's during the series and hadn't really stood up and I guess someone had to given that there was no (Brad) Hodge, (David) Hussey or (Cameron) White," he said.

But the 26-year-old conceded the last-ball loss was extremely hard to take.
"We had our eyes on four Twenty20 titles but unfortunately not to be tonight," he said.

"(Qualifying for) the Champions League's a bonus but our goal was to win four Twenty20's in a row, and also we had a goal of winning three titles - the Twenty20, the Ford Ranger Cup and the Sheffield Shield."

"Unfortunately one had gone begging but hopefully we can get the next two."
