Bulls charge to bonus win

21/10/2009 9:02 PM

A 141-run opening stand from Chris Hartley and Ryan Broad has seen Queensland pocket a bonus point in its first Ford Ranger Cup win for the season, a six-wicket triumph over South Australia at the Gabba on Wednesday.

Wicketkeeper Hartley was handed the responsibility of opening the batting for the first time at state level and performed superbly, notching his first half-century in the one-day form of the game.

Hartley and Broad both scored 60 as they plundered the hapless Redbacks' pace attack with ease before the introduction of left-arm orthodox spinner Aaron O'Brien saw Broad trapped lbw.

The hosts, perhaps overly aware of the fact they needed to wrap up the win inside 40 overs for the bonus point, looked to hit the accelerator in a misguided effort to ice the game.

Hartley, Lee Carseldine and Nathan Reardon all found themselves back in the sheds in quick succession after looking to find the boundary, but the hosts were able to find their feet and overhaul the Redbacks' modest total of 184.

Glen Batticciotto brought up the winning runs in the 37th over after clipping a wide ball from O'Brien down to the fine leg boundary.

The Redbacks would have been hopeful of pace ace Shaun Tait snaring early wickets after they posted a sub-par total thanks largely to Scott Walter's figures of 4-34 on debut.

On what was a typical Gabba pitch, Walter and second-gamer Ben Cutting (3-30) swung the ball superbly to rattle the visitors.

South Australia's Peter George posted the miserly figures of 0-16 from ten overs, but Tait (0-52 from eight overs) struggled for fluency.

The home side's stranglehold on the contest was set up on the back of a commendable performance in the field, spearheaded by Walter who was suitably rewarded with man of the match honours.

South Australia captain Graham Manou won the toss and elected to bat, but it proved to be a tactical win for Bulls' skipper Chris Simpson.

Walter proved deadly in his first taste of domestic one-day cricket, picking up the scalps of Manou (34) and the big-hitting Mark Cosgrove (29).

The visitors started in the worst fashion possible, with recalled opener Michael Klinger trapped lbw by Cutting with the first delivery of the day.

Daniel Harris followed for a duck in the second over, out edging to Nathan Rimmington, to leave his side reeling at 2-0.

Cosgrove and Manou rebuilt their side's innings with a 54-run partnership, but both fell to Walter in the space of 15 minutes.

Cameron Borgas departed soon after for six to see the Redbacks slump to 5-81, but 22-year-old Tom Cooper showed maturity beyond his years.

Cooper impressed in his knock of 54, but his dismissal triggered another collapse as the visitors lost their final five wickets for just 26 runs, ending their innings prematurely in the 47th over.

O'Brien (38) made a start and looked comfortable at the crease, but he failed to make the most of it, much like Cooper, Cosgrove and Manou.

Once the Bulls started batting, George was able to keep it tight, but Broad and Hartley soon got on top.

Hartley brought up his milestone in bizarre fashion, teeing-off at a 'free hit' from Dan Christian and giving Borgas a regulation catch in the deep.

Cosgrove and O'Brien picked up two wickets apiece in the frenzied finish, but the damage was well and truly done.
