England women clinch series

04/07/2009 9:26 AM

England has clinched its first one-day series win against Australia since 1976 after a thrilling final-ball two-wicket win at Stratford on Friday.

With the game being reduced to 29 overs due to overnight storms, the Southern Stars battled to reach 150 and looked favourites to win when they had the hosts in trouble at 8-133.

Laura Marsh came to the crease with 18 runs still needed to win, but that was reduced to two with one ball remaining, and Marsh secured the win after she was dropped on the final ball.

After being sent in, Australia looked in trouble at 3-23, but Lisa Sthalekar (38) and Lauren Ebsary (40) rescued the innings with a 78-run stand.

England's spinners Holly Colvin and Beth Morgan halted the charge with two wickets each before Ellyse Perry clubbed 16 off nine balls to life the total to 150.

Perry then made an impact with the ball as the hosts slumped to 4-73 after Caroline Atkins' 35 gave them a solid start.

Wickets fell at regular intervals with Perry and Shelley Nitschke claiming two each before Marsh guided England home.

Australia now has to regroup for the final two matches before trying to recapture the Ashes in a one-off Test.
