Retiring wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist farewelled the WACA Ground in grand style, smashing a century in Australia's gutsy 63-run bonus-point victory over Sri Lanka on Friday night.
In reply to Australia's 236, Sri Lanka was on track for victory at 5-154 after 38 overs with Kumar Sangakkara (80) in complete control at the crease.
But spinner Brad Hogg (2-41) helped spark a collapse that saw Sri Lanka lose 5-14 to be all out for 173 in 45.3 overs, gifting Australia the bonus point and top spot on the Commonwealth Bank Series table.
Despite Australia's heroics with the ball, it was Gilchrist who stole the show.
The swashbuckling left-hander, who will retire from international cricket at the conclusion of the series, smashed 118 from 132 balls with nine fours and three sixes in a fairytale final hit-out in Perth.
Gilchrist leapt into the air and pumped his fist as he notched his 16th ODI century, with the crowd rising as one to acknowledge a fine knock from their favourite son.
But it wasn't enough for Australia to see out its overs, with the home side bowled out with two balls remaining after winning the toss and electing to bat.
It was a massive collapse from Australia, which at one point was cruising at 2-171 in the 37th over before losing its last eight wickets for just 65 runs on a good batting deck.
Michael Clarke was forced to undergo an X-ray after Lasith Malinga (4-47) struck him in the ribs with a vicious, rising delivery, but scans cleared Clarke of serious injury.
Sri Lanka made a blistering start to its run chase, smashing 16 runs from the opening Brett Lee over before moving to 0-29 after three.
But Australia struck a double blow, with Nathan Bracken (3-21) removing Sanath Jayasuriya for 12 and Mitchell Johnson (3-29) knocking over Tillakaratne Dilshan's castle for 11, reducing Sri Lanka to 2-34.
It should have been 3-43 when Mahela Jayawardene edged Johnson through to Ricky Ponting at second slip, but the Aussie captain failed to hang on to the high catch.
But Ponting didn't make the same mistake twice, gobbling up Jayawardene four overs later with a regulation catch at second slip to reduce the visitors to 3-71 after 11 overs.
Andrew Symonds pulled off arguably the catch of the summer to remove Chamara Silva for a duck and leave Sri Lanka precariously placed at 4-76.
Silva cracked Bracken to cover where Symonds leapt and thrust out his left hand to snare the superb catch just inches above the turf.
A patient stand between Sangakkara and Kapugedera inched Sri Lanka towards victory but, needing 82 runs from the last 12 overs, the visitors' tail-enders lost their heads - and their wickets - as Australia surged its way to victory.
Hogg claimed the scalps of Farveez Maharoof and Chaminda Vaas in consecutive deliveries and Bracken snared Nuwan Kulasekara for a duck as Sri Lanka lost 3-1 to slump to 8-160.
And when Johnson bowled Malinga for a duck and Sangakkara departed in similar fashion to the bowling of Brett Lee, it was game over.
