Gayle warning for Aussies

Gayle warning for Aussies

24/06/2008 1:49 PM

West Indies skipper Chris Gayle has declared his side will be up to Australia's lofty standards when the two teams open their one-day series in St Vincent on Tuesday.

Gayle wants, and expects, a winning start at Arnos Vale after downing the world champions in a Twenty20 meeting last week.

"We are looking to win the series," Gayle told reporters.

"We beat them in the Twenty20 in Barbados and that was tremendous."

"We come here to St Vincent and we are looking for a winning start and continue in that way."

"We expect Australia to be tough competition but we will be up to it."

Gayle, who missed the opening two Tests of the host nation's 2-0 loss in the fight for the Frank Worrell trophy, is still battling a groin injury.

He is a certain starter, however, in a new-look side with an eye to the future.

"This series will be an opportunity for all the new players in the team," Gayle said.

"It will be good to see them get a chance to perform and we will be looking to come up with the best combinations."

"We have the ICC Champions Trophy coming up in September so we want to have a close look at everyone."

Gayle, a punishing opening batsmen who has scored 6307 runs in 179 ODIs, said his fitness was improving.

"I am looking to be positive and block out all the negative thoughts that might come into my mind," Gayle said.

"I don't want to take on too much at this stage. I will be looking to pace myself, I will enjoy it and make sure that we rally around each other."

West Indies squad: Chris Gayle (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice captain), Sulieman Benn, Dwayne Bravo, Patrick Browne, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Andre Fletcher, Xavier Marshall, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Jerome Taylor.
