Haddin out of Champions Trophy

Australia will defend its ICC Champions Trophy title without wicketkeeper Brad Haddin who is recovering from surgery on his left ring finger.

Haddin broke the finger on the morning of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston and was replaced by South Australian Graham Manou but returned just days later and kept wicket in the final two matches of the series as Australia eventually succumbed 2-1.

The 31-year-old, who scored a century in the opening Test in Cardiff and finished with 268 runs at a series average of 44.7, returned home following the end of the fifth Test to undergo further assessment on the injury.

Cricket Australia has made an application to the International Cricket Council hoping to replace Haddin in its 15-man squad with Tasmanian gloveman Tim Paine, who was chosen in the initial 30-man squad but didn't make the final cut.

Selectors had originally hoped Haddin would be fit to rejoin the Australian squad either during the one-day series in England or in time for the Champions Trophy in South Africa later this month but he'll instead remain at home in order to regain full fitness.

"While it is extremely disappointing to miss the ICC Champions Trophy, the good news is that the surgery was successful and my finger will be 100 percent when the recovery period is finalised," Haddin said.

"I am aiming to be available for selection for the one-day series in India, however, this is a decision that will be made in consultation with the Cricket Australia medical staff when the time arises."

"In the past I have been able to recover from finger injuries and surgery very quickly and I am hopeful this will again be the case."

CA doctor Trefor James confirmed that Haddin would not be rushed back ahead of schedule.

"After discussion with Brad's surgeon and the Cricket Australia medical staff, it is clear Brad will not have recovered sufficiently for him to be considered for any part of the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa," James said.

"While the surgery was a success and there have been no complications, the timeframe for recovery is not sufficient and therefore he cannot be considered for selection."
