Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden will replace Allan Border on the board of Cricket Australia (CA).
Border, the Australian captain from 1985 to 1994, has stood down from the board after seven years, leaving a position available for Hayden after his retirement from international cricket in January.
To take up the position, Hayden has stood down from the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) board.
"I have accepted this new challenge because I am passionate about Australian cricket in its totality," Hayden said.
"This includes the kids in the cities and in the remote areas who want to play the game but might not have the access and opportunities I had, the volunteers ... and the fans who turn up to support the game."
CA chairman Jack Clarke said he was happy to have someone with Hayden's experience take the position.
"He brings a combination of contemporary, elite playing experience in all major cricketing nations," Clarke said.
"(He also has an) additional understanding of player issues through his work on the board of the Australian Cricketers Association, experience in the new Twenty20 phenomena as an IPL player, and a passion for development of Indigenous cricket."
