Hayden up to ninth

04/11/2008 7:06 AM

Australian opening batsman Matthew Hayden has returned to the top 10 of ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen.

The Queenslander had knocks of 83 and 16 not out in the third Test against India to climb up two places to ninth position.

However, Mike Hussey - who took over the No.1 ranking from West Indies' Shivnarine Chanderpaul after the first Test in Banglaore - dropped another place down to fourth position, while Michael Clarke also fell one position to 14th.

Captain Ricky Ponting maintained his fifth position.

It was a disappointing Test for the bowlers, with Stuart Clark and Brett Lee both slipping one place each to third and fifth respectively.

India's bowlers also fell in the rankings with Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma dropping two and five places respectively.

Opening batsman Gautam Gambhir rocketed up 11 places to 18th position to achieve his career-best ranking thanks to a 206 and 36 in his two innings in the third Test.

Man of the match VVS Laxman, who scored 200 not out and 59 not out, jumped five places to 11th position, while Rahul Dravid dropped out of the top 20 for the first time in 11 years.
