Hilditch remains chief

Hilditch remains panel chief

16/10/2009 6:26 PM

Andrew Hilditch will remain as the chairman of the National Selection Panel until at least after the 2011 World Cup, with Cricket Australia confirming it had extended the former Test batsman's contract.

Hilditch and the other members of the NSP - David Boon, Merv Hughes and Jamie Cox - were criticised by some former Australia cricketers over their decisions during the recent Ashes series which Australia lost 2-1.

But immediately after Australia lost the urn for the second time in succession on English soil, Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland refused to blame Hilditch or the NSP for the series loss.

"I think everyone will be looking for people to blame. I don't think that in anyway we can hold the selectors accountable for us losing the Ashes. At the end of the day, the players go out and do the business on the field," Sutherland said at the time.

"It was only six or seven months ago that we had fantastic series in South Africa where we beat the No.1 team in the world with a pretty similar line-up. The selectors were hailed for their selection, I guess in some ways the perceived risks they took in backing young talent. I think it would be jumping to conclusions to be blaming the selectors for this."

Hilditch, who was also criticised for taking leave during this year's Sydney Test against South Africa when Matthew Hayden was fighting for his Test career, has now been rewarded with an extension.

The announcement on Friday was buried at the bottom of a media release about Michael Clarke's ascension to the Australian Twenty20 captaincy.

While Sutherland had said previously that CA was looking into making at least one position on the NSP panel full-time, the statement did not specify whether Hilditch, who works as a lawyer, would continue in his current part-time role or whether it would be in some other capacity.

"Australia is a team in rebuilding phase but this country has many talented young cricketers, as illustrated by Australia's recent victory in the ICC Champions Trophy. The National Selection Panel will continue to be led by Andrew Hilditch," Sutherland's statement on Friday said.

The futures of Boon, Hughes and Cox will be determined at a later date.
