Hopes still hopeful

Hopes still hopeful

James Hopes has played down any suggestions of selection in the Australian one-day side after an excellent all-round performance with bat and ball in Queensland's rain-affected 59-run win over South Australia in the Ford Ranger Cup match at the Gabba on Wednesday.

Hopes is an incumbent in the national one-day side, having taken on Bangladesh in the Top End series in September.

But the rise of fellow all-rounder Shane Watson and the return of Andrew Symonds has led some media to speculate Hopes may be left out of the national side.

Hopes would not be drawn into any selection discussion, suggesting he is taking a relaxed approach to his cricket.

"It is very interesting, as I've said in the past, when I first played for Australia I put a lot of pressure on myself to play for Australia," Hopes said.

"When I got left out of the team I said I wasn't going to do that, and I'm not going to do it this time either."

"I'll just keep doing what I do and if they see fit to pick me, I guess that's good, and if they don't there's reasons for that."

One of those reasons, Hopes believes, is that his two Queensland team-mates are ahead of him in the pecking order.

"One of the all-rounders is the most devastating one-day all-rounder in the world," he said of Symonds.

"The other one, he's a class player Shane Watson, and it won't be long before he's playing all forms of the game for Australia."

"People talk about his injuries, but I said it 12 months ago, if he goes through 12 months to two years without getting hurt, people aren't going to say a word about his injuries, they'll be talking about how good a player he is."

Watson claimed figures of 2-41 and was unbeaten on 23 when the Ford Ranger Cup match was called off after inclement weather.

But on this occasion he was shown up by Hopes, who smashed a blistering 75 and took 2-24 to ensure the Bulls would claim a bonus point.

Hopes was relatively content with his best score for the season.

"(I was) more happy with the bat, the ball was all about trying to get rid of the stiffness of two back-to-back four-day games and to just get through," Hopes said.

"I've been there or there about all year with the bat, I've been getting 20 or 30 and hitting them quite well and finding interesting ways to get out."

"Tonight was good to finally get more than 20 or 30 obviously, but once again I found an interesting way to get out."
