Katich makes bid for Test recall

18/05/2008 10:49 AM

Simon Katich has done his bid for a Test recall no harm with a well-compiled 97 against a Jamaica XI.

Katich was one of three Australian batsmen to pass 50 in a solid workout at Trelawny Stadium in Jamaica ahead of the opening test against the West Indies on Friday.

Australian, in response to the Jamaican outfit's first-innings total of 297, was all out for 396 late on the second day of play.

Batting a second time, the hosts reached 0-11 at stumps.

Katich top-scored for the tourists at the head of the order. He combined with Phil Jacques (48) to add 95 for the first wicket.

The only sore point for Katich, New South Wales' Pura Cup winning skipper, was his dismissal three shy of what would have been a deserved century.

He was sensationally caught by a diving Xavier Marshall at deep mid-wicket, but his exit didn't slow the visitors.

Andrew Symonds came to the crease and was at his belligerent best. He clouted 86 in a rapid 146-run stand with Brad Haddin (64).

Brad Hodge managed 16 before he was bowled, while skipper Ricky Ponting's indifferent run of form continued.

Ponting reached 17 and looked at ease before a stunning caught-and-bowled from Nikita Miller sent him on his way.
